ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Social Sciences

The ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership is excellently situated to draw on a network of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and Cambridge academics to deliver opportunities for partners to engage in knowledge exchange and experience-based activities.

We have a defined strategy for encouraging organisations to benefit for partnership with the Cambridge ESRC DTP and the wider social sciences at Cambridge through a variety of mechanisms such as delivery of knowledge exchange seminars (e.g. employability days) or through masterclass events related to particular topics like Energy or Sustainable Transport.

There are ongoing opportunities for external partner organizations to work with the University of Cambridge in knowledge exchange activities of mutual interest- in the form of workshops, seminars and networking events.

An example of this was our ESRC DTP Workshop "Real World Problems – Social Science Solutions". This workshop was led by Mark Liddle, the Managing Director of an independent consulting organisation which has worked for many years with a range of government and non-government organisations on research design and evaluations (both within and outside the UK). The workshop involved a short talk about general principles of evaluation research, and then participants were divided into small interdisciplinary groups to prepare research and evaluation designs. These utilized issues drawn from the real world of social policy. In the afternoon, each group presented its design/evaluation proposal and received feedback from the course leader and their fellow participants.
